THE REVIEW
The lowdown
While we often get to look at expensive high tech handsets that start “from free” thanks to the joy of mobile phone contracts, plenty of people prefer the cheaper pay-as-you-go option. Sagem’s my401x falls into both business and casual user’s categories in the hard fought budget handset market at a price of below £80, although exactly how much will be at the decision of the network.
What’s good?
Stylistically, budget handsets are often found lacking and can be bit of a burden on the pocket. Sagem seems to have tackled both of these issues head-on as the my401x is a strong contender for slimmest handset below the £100 mark and weighs just 90g. Its candy-bar design isn’t going to win any awards but only because errs on the side of smart rather than distinctive. It is also worth noting that we were playing with the black version but it is likely that the silver model (as pictured) will be the most common variety of this handset.
To put its dimensions of 105 x 15 x 46mm in perspective, the ultra-slim Motorola Razr is only 1.2mm thinner (when closed) but it will set you back around £130.
The handset has a pretty good button layout which is easier to use than those on some rival compact handsets, however it is let down slightly by the four-way menu navigation button which can prove a bit fiddly. The menu itself is pretty straight forward to use and reminiscent of the Sony Ericsson layout.
What’s bad?
The my401x is based on the my301x released late last year. The sole difference between the two is the addition of a camera which should appeal to more casual users. However, the weak VGA quality camera coupled with a bit of a grainy 65k colour LCD means that your pics aren’t going to blow you away. Business users might find it worth opting for the predecessor, especially now that many companies are getting nervous at the number of camera phones being taken into offices.
The lithium-ion battery grants 350 hours of standby and 4 hours of talk time which isn’t particularly bad but is bested by a lot of equally priced competitors.
Do you need it?
The Sagem my401x will be available on Orange, Vodafone and T-mobile pay-as-you-go tariffs and the anticipated sub-£80 price tag seems pretty reasonable to me. It is a smart, functional handset that offers a little more (or less, in terms of bulk) for your outlay than its rivals. [Source]
