Do i even wanna dig it out in the first place? hmm .. anyway for the active and adventurous this is a certainly must have cellphone. Built in compas, stopwatch, 1.3 megapixels camera, MP3 player and more!

LG Telecom, Korea’s smallest mobile operator, Thursday took the wraps off the nation’s first waterproof mobile phone, canU 502S, developed under alliance with Japanese firm Casio Computer.

If dropped in a pool, tub or sink, this phone will survive in roughly thirty minutes since we sealed its tiny crevices with rubber packing,’’ LG Telecom spokesman Kang Shin-koo said.

Two big holes for a speaker and built-in camera module were also specially treated to prevent water from soaking into the handset through them.

Its other strength is that the model can endure shocks in case of accidental drops because materials such as urethane and glass were employed that are resistant to such shocks.

Users will be offered a replaceable protector that can be inserted at the end of the phone as an additional safety catch. It is just like a bumper for a car,’’ Kang said.

LG will start marketing the watertight phone, which is also armed with an MP3 player and a mega-pixel camera, today with a price tag of 550,000 won.

While wireless carriers make advances in cell phones, the country’s legitimate mobile handset vendor Samsung Electronics achieved a milestone of producing 100 million units a year.

The world’s third-largest cell phone manufacturer Thursday said it rolled out this year’s 100-millionth phone Wednesday at the Kumi plant in North Kyongang Province.

This year we made a couple of grand slams and that significantly boosted our sales in the global arena. Yet, the quantity is not our priority. We will continue to seek our strategy of making high-margin premium products,’’ a Samsung official said.

Samsung ventured into the mobile phone industry in 1988 and its annual output reached 1 million units in 1996 before topping the 10 million and 50 million plateaus in 1999 and in 2003, respectively.

Currently, approximately 85 percent of its production is made in the Kumi plant while maintaining three overseas bases at Tianjin and Shenzhen in China and Campinas in Brazil.

The installation of a new Samsung plant is underway in India that will crank out 1 million units annually starting next year.
